checklist
Artwork provenance research checklist
A practical checklist for identifying an artwork, building an ownership timeline, testing sources, and recording uncertainty.
Source-first field guide
Build a defensible history from object identity, events, citations, contradictions, and explicit uncertainty—without letting a plausible narrative outrun its sources.
Not sure where to begin?
Answer four questions about your workflow—no artwork details, account, or email required.
Find my research pathRecord titles, maker assertions, dimensions, medium, inscriptions, labels, identifiers, and images. Do not merge records because their titles or subjects resemble each other.
Represent each alleged ownership transfer, custody change, exhibition, sale, restitution, or publication as a dated event with actors, roles, places, and source IDs.
Split conclusions into atomic claims and link each one to quotations, pages, source quality, contradictions, certainty, and a next verification step.
State the last supported event, next supported event, unsupported interval, searches attempted, and evidence still required. Missing evidence is not affirmative evidence of wrongdoing.
Track metadata, artwork, photograph, scan, and text rights independently. The physical object and every digital representation can have different reuse conditions.
Retain source receipts, access dates, hashes where permitted, AI prompts and corrections, and the accountable human reviewer behind consequential conclusions.

template
A reusable structure for object identity, ownership events, citations, contradictions, rights, and research decisions.
how-to
Turn scattered ownership references into a dated, source-linked timeline without inventing continuity between records.
checklist
Avoid merging different artworks that share a translated title, subject, maker, or approximate dimensions.
how-to
Describe provenance gaps accurately, show the searches performed, and avoid turning missing evidence into allegations.
template
Map every material provenance claim to quotations, source quality, conflicts, certainty, and the next verification step.
checklist
Track image sources, rights statements, permitted uses, attribution, and unresolved restrictions separately from metadata rights.
how-to
Create durable, precise citations for lots, object records, catalogue pages, images, and changing online metadata.
how-to
Use AI for bounded extraction, comparison, and query generation while keeping citations, uncertainty, and human decisions visible.
how-to
Build a durable source ledger with retrieval context, hashes, permissions, and correction history.
